The ex-USS JOSEPH P. KENNEDY (DD 850), was towed to Goat Island
from Fall River, MA where it has been in mothballs for years to
be used in the film. The number "753" has been
painted on the hull to make it appear as the ex-USS JOHN R. PIERCE.
The JOSEPH P. KENNEDY was the actual ship that stopped the Greek Freighter carrying
the Soviet missiles during the crisis. To make a political statement to
the Soviets during the crisis, the President ordered the ship that carries his
family namesake to intercept the freighter. Other destroyers shadowed the freighter
until the KENNEDY could steam down to the vicinity from its homeport in Newport.
The KENNEDY gained worldwide attention at that moment for intercepting and forcing
the ship to turn back.
