The first year FOBD attracted nearly a thousand members from Rhode Island & New England states. In 1988, FOBD helped the United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association (USABDA) form 4 new chapters in New England by furnishing lists of our members in various areas. This helped reduce our membership and greatly increased ballroom dancing events for everyone.
In 1987, FOBD helped form the Brown University Ballroom Dance Club. With the late Bill Benett of USABDA and the late Christina Cryan in 1988, FOBD sponsored the first collegiate ballroom dance competition in the Northeast. This attracted 64 students from 5 colleges plus 70 adult amateur dancers. After holding 3 Northeastern annual competitions, FOBD requested the new USABDA Rhode Island Chapter (which we had helped form) to take over. FOBD members were more interested in hosting social dinner dancing events. Recently Brown University Ballroom Dance Club held an all college competition attracting over 500 competing students from 20 Northeastern colleges.
The average age of our membership grows younger each year due to interest by younger dancers. Their interest usually begins with swing and eventually spreads to all forms of ballroom dancing including waltz, foxtrot, cha cha, rumba, tango, salsa, etc.
FOBD has featured big name bands like Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Sammy Kaye, Guy Lombardo, Artie Shaw and Bombay Jim & The Swinging Sapphires. Local bands include Duke Belaire, Larry Brown's "Swing Lane", "Meadowlarks", "Moonlighters", New Era Big Band, Bob Shurtleff's Swingtime, Bob Paola, Pastels, Mel-Tones, Ed Rogers, Ralph Stewart, Phil Tandy, John Worsley, Artie Cabral, and Anything Goes, etc. Cruise lines often book big name bands of the 40's and ballroom dance themes to help promote off-season and relocation cruises.
Dance studios are reporting increased interest in ballroom dancing. There are more movies about ballroom dancing and more ballroom dance competitions are being featured on TV as well as the current televison show "Dancing with the Stars".
We look forward to ballroom dancing becoming a dance sport in the International Olympics.
We are actively promoting ballroom dance instruction in grade schools, high schools and colleges.
When planning fund-raising events involving dancing, charitable organizations often consult Newport Ballroom Dancing for band suggestions, advice and support.
FOBD dance locations have included: Belcourt Castle, Bobby's Starlight Ballroom, Coachmen Cinderella Ballroom, Navy Officers' Club, King Philip Ballroom (Bristol), King Philip Ballroom (Wrentham), Lakeview Ballroom, Palladium Ballroom, Ramada Inn, Roseland Ballroom (Taunton), Seaport Inn, Sheridan Islander, Doubletree, Hyatt Regency, J&W Inn, Sea Fare Inn (Tea Dance), VFW Halls, White's of Westport, Venus de Milo, Viking Hotel Convention Center, Atlantic Beach Club and of course the spacious Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet. Most of our events this year will be at the Convention Center Ballroom, Hyatt Regency, Newport.
Our membership through the end of 2005 currently consists of 579 couples, 212 single ladies and 135 single gentlemen for
a total of 1505 paid members from 5 states. Events are limited to 250 to avoid crowding the floor.
