PORTSMOUTH YOUTH SAILING |
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
(Subject to Change)
Class Description:
New for 2008, we are pleased to offer the Intro to Racing Program. This program is open to children who have the ability to control their boats (i.e. tacking and gybing) AND are interested in participating in Racing (such as the NBYA Green Fleet Opti regattas).
We also hope to design each program session to particular skill sets for optimum course instruction in every level. Therefore, we ask that you assess the level of ability for your child(ren) and choose the level that is appropriate for them and then pick the class time that works best for you. Your assessment does not have to be totally accurate but will enable your child to sail with other children of similar abilities / ages to better the instruction and experience. We reserve the right to switch your child to a different level if they do not meet the minimum skills.
The weekly courses are half day (AM or PM) camps aimed at 7-12 year olds. A typical class size is 10-12 children with three instructors. The AM session is from 9am-12pm and will typically be geared to Beginner or Combined Levels. The PM session is from 1pm-4pm and is geared toward Intermediate or Racing levels. There will be no classes on the Fouth of July. Fee for Week 2 will be prorated.
The Course Fee is $140 for the 1st week and $120 for each additional week.
LEVELS
| BEGINNER | Designed for the young beginner, this course covers parts of the boat, terminology, and basic seamanship. Emphasis is on FUN and comfort in and around boats on the water. To move up to INTERMEDIATE, the student is expected to be able to sail without an instructor in the boat and control the boat in small breezes with confidence. |
| INTERMEDIATE | Continuing where BEGINNER leaves off or for the older beginner (who can rapidly catch up), this course offers additional “tiller time.” It is expected that each student will be comfortable in most situations and confident to sail without an instructor in the boat. To move to INTRO TO RACING, the student must show capabilities of tacking and gybing and following a simple course around buoys. |
| COMBINED | This course is intended to combine both the BEGINNER and INTERMEDIATE skill levels. This is ideal for families with two or more children of different abilities who wish to take the class at the same time. It will also be offered in the AM during weeks when INTRO TO RACING is offered to allow a more flexible program schedule. |
| INTRO TO RACING | This is for the more advanced learner where racing fundamentals and basic rules will be covered. Some of the children at this level may elect to attend a regatta (Green Fleet Opti) at some point in the season. If you are unsure if this course is right for your child, please feel free to email us for advice. |
