Saint Barnabas Church in Portsmouth, Rhode Island entered 11 teams into the Catholic Athletic League for the 2007-2008 basketball season. Last season, the Saint Barnabas Boys Blue Open team(7th-8th grade)reached the Diocesan Final Four. This fine team lost in the playoffs to perenial powerhouse Saint Philip of Smithfield. Our Boys Blue Open team finished the regular season undefeated including a victory over Saint Philip. Saint Philip went on to finish in 2nd place at the New England Tournament. Clearly, our Boys Blue team was one of the best CAL teams in all of New England. The entire Saint Barnabas community extends congratulations to all of our cohesive, hard-working teams from last season.
Statewide, there are about 250 teams in the league formerly known as CYO. Divisions within the league exist for all levels of play, from instructional to highly competitive. The C.A.L. program is not about wins and losses, but working together as a team, loving one another, and striving to grow in the fundamental Christian values of dedication, loyalty, and self-sacrifice.
Thanks to the generous support of Father Randolph Chew, Pastor of Saint Barnabas
Church, and our sponsors listed at right, we are able to continue
to expand this community program.
