2008 - 2009 SEASON

Saint Barnabas Church in Portsmouth, Rhode Island entered 11 teams into the Catholic Athletic League for the 2007-2008 basketball season. Last season, the Saint Barnabas Boys Blue Open team(7th-8th grade)reached the Diocesan Final Four. This fine team lost in the playoffs to perenial powerhouse Saint Philip of Smithfield. Our Boys Blue Open team finished the regular season undefeated including a victory over Saint Philip. Saint Philip went on to finish in 2nd place at the New England Tournament. Clearly, our Boys Blue team was one of the best CAL teams in all of New England. The entire Saint Barnabas community extends congratulations to all of our cohesive, hard-working teams from last season.

Statewide, there are about 250 teams in the league formerly known as CYO. Divisions within the league exist for all levels of play, from instructional to highly competitive. The C.A.L. program is not about wins and losses, but working together as a team, loving one another, and striving to grow in the fundamental Christian values of dedication, loyalty, and self-sacrifice.

Thanks to the generous support of Father Randolph Chew, Pastor of Saint Barnabas Church, and our sponsors listed at right, we are able to continue to expand this community program.

Mission Statement: C.A.L. Basketball

The mission of the Catholic Athletic League, and our program here at Saint Barnabas, focuses on value-based, harmonious, and honorable competition that complements the home, church, and school. The league adheres to the following Christian governing values:

  • Development of mind, body, and spirit
  • Promotion of academic achievement of all athletes
  • Principle of loving one another through spiritual growth, recognition of human dignity, respectful actions, good sportsmanship, and ethical conduct

In addition, we would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to the Portsmouth School Department for providing excellent facilities. Our middle school gym is one of the best facilities in the entire Diocese of Providence Catholic Athletic League. And special thanks to our dedicated hard-working Board of Directors.
